Had a great time taking Mark’s RV up around Yellowstone and the Tetons for the week! Mark was very respectful and responsive whenever I had a few questions about the ride

We had been searching RVs between 2019-new since we planned on a long trip and felt comfortable with a newer model. It was just my mom and I. Two girls on the road. Before reserving the RV I had asked the host I could pick it up the day before the trip to get it ready since we had planned on being on the road by 7 am for our highly anticipated trip. He had agreed so we booked it a month prior. I never heard a thing after from the host. Sunday before the trip I had said we were looking forward to the trip, asked how big the fridge was, and that he was still planning on us getting it Thursday. No response. Wednesday morning I wrote and said I’d plan on being there by 5 on Thursday unless I heard otherwise and left my cell phone number. No response. I finally received a text 2:30 on Thursday saying he had been “so busy at work doing pest control” and apologized. I tried to be under but aren’t you running a business renting out your RV as well? We paid a lot of money. He said he wasn’t sure of the condition but would have his brother get it ready and top off the fluids. To do so he asked that I get there between 5:30-6. When we were almost there he said nobody could be there to hand off the keys but gave me a code to his lockbox. As soon as I pulled up I instantly noticed temp tags with the faintest date written on it. I called the owner he told me he should be getting the plates any day but it should be ok. The outside was covered in black dirt like nobody had attempted to clean it for months. Stepping inside it smelled like a gallon of febreeze had been dumped on any fabric available. It was over powering! I didn’t feel great about it but I was already behind schedule.
As soon as I got on the normal road I tried checking the windows wondering what the loud noise was. On the freeway it was even worse. Once getting it to my place (an hour from the hosts house) we started trying to see really what we were dealing with. My bf is a high end mechanic (thank god) but immediately was able to point out there was a leak in the exhaust, this the loud drive. Started looking into the temp tag situation and thought we’d verify the registration. There were no papers for us. I texted Mark the host. He said to check in the glove box (like we hadn’t immediately looked there). He then gave the excuse of the last renters taking the papers. I asked if he could at least send me pics of the registration information. The temp tags looked so sketch and we were crossing 5 state lines. I wouldn’t want to anything to happen if I couldn’t prove this vehicle was good. Plus not being able to meet the owner for the hand off made it that much more uncomfortable. He never responded that night. I had requested the pic around 8pm so it wasn’t unreasonable. No response at all.
We then started opening drawers and plumes of dust came out! The dishes, utensils, pots/pans had not been washed. They were covered in dirt and pet hair. The only thing I could tell had been cleaned were the 12 giant towels left. We spent a long time taking everything out and washing/cleaning it. We gave up at 11 deciding we needed to get some sleep, which I did not get any since nothing seemed right. I finally called Outdoorsy at 6:30am to get some advice. This was the only point of the rental process I hold in high regard! The service rep listened and gave some great advice. He was understanding and professional. From that conversation I texted Mark to explain my disappointment and wanted to return the RV for so many reasons. This was before 7am. I did not hear from Mark until almost 10. This was a text message saying he would call in 20 min which ended up being 40. In the meantime I was trying to find other available RVs on Outdoorsy, which as you could imagine last min could not find any. When I finally talked to Mark he said I was overreacting and cops don’t look twice at the registration. He agreed to refund me on the cleaning fee but said he’d send me a pic of the registration soon. So, we decided to make the most of it and spent the next 4 hours deep cleaning the inside and outside to get it how we had anticipated the host would have done prior to us receiving it. The comment about his brother topping off the fluids… oil was very low. My bf put 2 qts of high grade oil in and an entire bottle of windshield fluid, so maybe his brother topped off the coolant? Not sure, but we spent our own time and money there. The mattress was so horrible! You could feel every spring in it, so we switched it out with a foam mattress we luckily had on a bunk bed. One out of the 2 cigarette lighters work for charging. There was soda dripping down cup holders, walls, and under the overhead sleeper mattresses. Ketchup on a handle and the other handles were sticky. We even found a dried up pancake behind one of the cushions at the dinette. I thought I would do some fine tuning but I did not expect we were going to be cleaning it from the last few times it had been rented out. I was worn out before our trip even started which was heartbreaking. We had been planning this since the beginning of the year.
We finally got a pic of the registration around 1pm. After confirming the papers to the vin we noticed the RV is actually a 2017 not a 2019 which is what was advertised. If it would have been listed correctly, I wouldn’t have even pulled up the listing to begin with. But we were already in it and 6.5 hrs behind, so we’re going to make the most of it. That whole day was wasted. We got to the area for our paid for campsite at 11pm so we couldn’t find the site. We ended up just pulling off the road to sleep. We also were too tired to stay awake for the meteor shower that was happening, which we had planned on being in this dark sky area, for. We were too tired to even sit and enjoy dinner since we had been trying to just get back on our schedule since we left so late.
The next morning we discovered the microwave didn’t work. Or the ac/heat unit on the ceiling. It was cold so we tried to turn on the furnace while we cooked breakfast. The carbon monoxide detector alarmed within ten minutes which scared us pretty bad. We had 2 dogs under 6lbs and another under 15lbs. Thank god for the detector! So we opened the doors to air it out, but letting the cold air in as well.
We started our trip Friday around 1:30 and by Sunday the black water was saying it was full. We had barely even used it! I’m guessing it had not been dumped prior to us getting it either. We got to a Maverick station to dump and oh my! Not only was it full, the sewer hose does not fasten securely on so it was splattering everywhere. Not only was I so embarrassed to make such a mess for Maverick (which we stayed to clean for 20 min), I had it all over my shoes! These shoes are going in the trash.
On his ad he has a dvd player listed. Seeing it was a national parks tour I went to 3 different libraries borrowing history dvds about the area n such. We were so excited to learn about these places along the way. Um, the sound barely worked. While the RV was plugged in you could barely hear it unless you were standing right next to it. With the generator going there wasn’t even a chance of watching one. I wouldn’t have spent all the time running around to different libraries had I known this wasn’t functional either.
He had duct tape holding the shelves up in the fridge which the bottom one gave way on Sunday. We only had a few things placed on it, but with it broken we had a hard time opening and shutting the fridge. So we bought gorilla tape and once again fixed it ourselves. (Taking time and energy away from our vacation)
The mornings we’d wake up to 33-35° weather we didn’t want to use the furnace so we tried running the truck and its heater. That didn’t work either. With the hole in the exhaust and RV not moving carbon monoxide got into the cabin that way too. And yes, detector went off that way too. We both had headaches the mornings it happened 5/8 mornings.
By Wednesday we were in New Mexico and melting. I texted Mark about the ac and he told me were the breaker box was. Upon looking at it 3 breakers had popped. This was something the host did not check for us as they “prepped.” It did correct the ac unit but the only way to get heat in the mornings still was by running the truck.
Another things to mention with the hole in the exhaust… I didn’t expect to get great gas mileage but it is known with a leak in the exhaust it directly impacts engine efficiency and in turn creates poor gas mileage.
We did have a good time. It wasn’t an easy trip due to everything we went to use either didn’t work or had to be fixed whether it was cleaned or corrected.
I was in communication with Mark as we got home to unload. I said we were unloading, going to clean the unit, dump, and then would be up. I’m just not the person that can hand something we’ve borrowed back if it’s not clean. It’s funny to say after 3000+ miles it still looked 4x better than it did when we picked it up. Dumped it, once again getting splatters all over another pair of shoes even though I was doing my best to avoid it. I let Mark know we’d be there in 40 min. He said that’d be good. I was really looking forward to discussing things in person with him finally. When I pulled up in the driveway there was a family in it packing their car. I asked where I should park it. The man (I had assumed was Mark) said I don’t know it’s your house. We figured out the man was renting the house for the weekend I was dropping it off at. It’s the same I picked it up from. I texted Mark and he asked I put the keys back in the lockbox. Not one time did I have any face to face interaction with him. It was so sketch feeling and such an uncomfortable rental situation. Oh, the cops won’t look twice at temp tags? Wrong! When we dropped down into Texas to see the Guadeloupe Mountains every car had to go through a border patrol inspection check point. They looked at the tags and by that point there wasn’t even faded numbers. I had to show the pics and our rental confirmation. The cop even pointed out the year difference from our booking and the registration. He said to tell the owner to make sure to send the proper documents the next time!
Marks final text was “hope you had a great time.” We did Mark, but it had nothing to do with this rental. It had everything to do with us making the most of it, being problem solvers, the helpful rep at outdoorsy, and amazing scenery we saw.
I think Outdoorsy should do a check on this owner and any of his listings. I know he’s charging renters a cleaning fee, which isn’t happening, and advertising false info with amenities he can not accommodate. I have pics a videos of everything listed.
